Two objects with masses of 4kg and 6kg are connected by a light string that passes over a frictionless pulley.?
(a) Determine the tension in the string.
(b) Determine the acceleration of each object.
(c) Determine the distance each object will move in the first second of motion if both objects start from rest.

M = 6kg, m = 4kg, T = Tension in string
a) Using F = ma and noting that the smaller mass accelerates upwards at the same magnitude that the larger mass does downwards:
1) For mass M: T – Mg = -Ma
2) For mass m: T – mg = ma
Rearranging to eliminate a gives:
(T – Mg) / -M = (T – mg) / m
which can be solved for T.
b) Plug the result for T into either of equations 1) or 2) and solve for a.
c) Simply v = a t
