Big Plush Bear

When it comes to stuffed animals, it just doesn’t get much better than a big plush bear; whether it’s a Teddy Bear, black, brown, polar, or panda, a big plush bear is simply the very best representation of what the world of soft toys has to offer.

In 2009, brown bears – commonly referred to as grizzly bears – were seen for the very first time catching and eating whitefish from a stream located in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories. While it’s very well known that brown bears ‘preferred’ meal is salmon, trout, and charr, scientifically, no one has ever seen them eating whitefish before.

Since 2003, every spring, satellite collars have been placed on several bears. While a helicopter survey of the bears was being done in 2007, patches of ground that had been disturbed near Pete’s Creek in the Mackenzie Delta, was noticed by researchers. When they landed they found two catches of whitefish that were either whole or partially eaten. Oliver Barker of the University of Alberta said his “first impression was excitement. My second was apprehension -  I don’t like being in willow thickets when there are bears nearby.”

In the Mackenzie Delta, brown bears face tough challenges when it comes to finding food. In addition, since they only spend five months of the entire year being active, both finding and eating enough food to sustain them while they hibernate puts additional pressure on them. “These bears are real opportunists. They’ll take advantage of different food sources,” says Barker. Since whitefish is so easily available, some bears will eat it. Despite the fact that bears are omnivores and mostly live on a vegetarian diet, the protein and fat they get from fish is a much better food source for them.

Barker believes that with a diet of whitefish in the fall, it’s proving to be quite significant in the diet of the Delta brown bears. He ultimately would like to see more research done on these particular bears and their feeding habits since there is still a lot that’s not known about them. While the whitefish in Pete’s Creek appear to be of great importance to the Mackenzie Delta bears, it wouldn’t take much a of disturbance to disrupt their feeding habits. As Barker puts it “there is still a lot we don’t know about Mackenzie Delta bears, and any development should be mindful of such resources.”

No matter which type of big plush bear you choose, you won’t be disappointed. While the real thing in its wild state, can be aggressive toward any human interference, as a soft toy, a big plush bear is meant to love and cherish and will never enter into a combative mode. They are after all, humanized by their owner in such a way as to be given very human qualities.
